Charles Schulz sent me a book the other day. It is a great little book, full of pictures. Even more than the book itself, I love the handwritten note Mr. Schulz wrote on the flyleaf—a note to me written with a blue felt tip pen.
You understand, Charlie Brown, more than anyone, how I felt when I got that personal note from your creator. You keep looking at your mailbox for a letter—any kind of letter—especially a personal one.
I get so many form letters that look personal. Now computers even print my name in the letter to make me believe I am known. It’s amazing, but no computer will ever replace the handwritten note from a friend.
So this is my personal letter to you, Charlie Brown. I love you. Millions of us love you. Your expressive face is the mirror in which we see ourselves every morning. When you look out of those little square boxes in the comic sections of our newspapers you are not only the mirror in which we see ourselves—you are the window through which we watch the rest of the world.
I know that this looks more like a book than a letter.
Frankly, it is a book—a book with covers and pictures. I had no choice, because when I started writing to you it turned out to be a long, long letter. Whom can I blame for that, Charlie Brown?
I’ll blame you. If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have this long list of questions rattling around in my mind. Now I am writing this letter to you.
It’s still a personal letter—a letter to you. Can I help it if a few million people want to look over my shoulder as I write? If I simply wrote to you out there in Santa Rosa, California, all these people would still have their questions.
While I am confessing, I may as well say that books hold a special fascination for me. Books have helped to change the world. They have also helped to change my life.
